Renewable Energy Sizing for Electric Vehicle Charging: A Case Study of Karnataka, India

India, like many other nations, is going through the transitional phase of electrifying its transport sector. As a member of the EV30@30 campaign led by the International Energy Agency (IEA), India aims to achieve a 30% sales share for electric vehicles (EVs) by 2030. The state of Karnataka is a leader in the nation’s clean energy transition and is currently at the third position in EV sales among all states.

Climate verses: Poetry zine

Science meets verse in Climate Verses - CSTEP’s first ever poetry zine.

This National Science Day, we step beyond data and dive into emotion, bringing you poetry from our researchers on nature, climate change, and the world we strive to protect. Through words, we explore resilience, hope, and the science that shapes our future.

Stakeholder consultation workshop on electric school buses: Kochi

School buses are integral to the daily routine of students and faculty, as they enable vital and timely commutes between residences and educational institutions. Similar to many other Indian states, more than 85% of school buses in Kerala are diesel-run, resulting in adverse effects on children’s health (carcinogenic exhaust fumes) and serious climate and environmental consequences. To mitigate these impacts, schools across the world (and some in India) are transitioning to cleaner vehicles and fuel technologies such as electric buses with zero tailpipe emissions.

A budget boost for solar power could reshape india’s energy and agricultural landscape

A clean, cheap, and reliable energy source can increase power supply to farmers while alleviating subsidy burdens and reducing greenhouse emissions. These are precisely the goals of the Central Government’s Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) scheme launched in 2019 with a budget outlay of INR 34,422 crores. But as the March 2026 end date is rapidly approaching, the scheme has achieved only 5% of its targeted 34.8 GW solar deployment.

Can the 2025 union budget be a catalyst for offshore wind?

The Indian government has made commendable strides in promoting renewable energy (RE), including setting an ambitious target to auction 37 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030. Offshore wind—a stable and reliable RE source—holds immense promise for diversifying India’s energy mix. However, achieving this goal will require significant financial and policy support. The upcoming Union Budget 2025 is an opportunity for the government to allocate additional funding and address key challenges to unlock the sector’s potential in India.

The diesel generator dilemma: Reliable power, unwanted emissions

If you face frequent power outages in your area, diesel generators (DGs) are possibly your only saviour during such times. They are known to provide reliable and uninterrupted power supply, which is especially needed in rural regions or areas with limited access to the grid. DG sets are an important tool, particularly for sectors such as telecommunications and healthcare.

But have you wondered about their emissions and how harmful they are to humans and the environment?
